Fall Seminar: Nietzsche, On the Genealogy of MoralsWeek 1: Overview and Preface
Following the success of his The Odyssey seminar last year, Greg Campbell is back for a four-part seminar series on Friedrich Nietzsche’s essay collection On the Genealogy of Morals.
Participants will read through the full work and explore its themes through open discussion. To help make the seminar a convivial and ongoing conversation, participants are expected to attend all four sessions.
This activity is open to all Morrin Centre members regardless of experience with seminars or philosophy.

Week 1 Themes
Schopenhauer: will and idea; suffering; primacy of will; escape from will.
Nietzsche: Birth of Tragedy; Apollo and Dionysius.
Nietzsche’s style; ambiguity; the aphoristic form; the ‘positionless’ position; nihilism; metaphysics; the ambiguity of religion.
Preface: the English psychologists; ‘natural’ morality; “know thyself”; origins of morality; morality’s history; openness; individuality; will to knowledge; value of morality; pity; joy; critique of values; rumination and forgetting; the future (what does Nietzsche want?).
The Facilitator
Greg Campbell trained as a pharmacist before returning to college to study philosophy and history of ideas. Having completed a Masters degree at Essex University in the UK and obtained his doctorate in philosophy from University College Dublin in Ireland, he undertook a post-doctorate at Columbia University, New York (aesthetics and politics in Adorno). During his studies, Greg continued to work part-time as a pharmacist. In addition to teaching a humanities course at Wilbur Smith College, Greg was also a stay-at-home dad for a while after moving to Chicago in 2014. Since moving to Quebec City in 2020, Greg has continued to work in the education sector.
