Five Wives (2019), which won the 2019 Governor General’s Award for Fiction, is an immersive dive into the ill-fated attempt by American missionaries to move into the territory of the reclusive Waorani people in Ecuador. Her other novels, The Opening Sky (2014), Curiosity (2010), and Reading by Lightning (2008), were nominated for and won a number of prizes. Joan lives in Winnipeg.
