The Morrin Centre is proud to present the first event in the My Morrin Series. On October 11, Jack Bryden will give a pictorial presentation about the mutiny in Victoria, BC and this unsettled period in Canada.

Exactly one hundred years ago in October, a strong feeling of discontent was beginning to emerge not only in Europe but in Canada as well. The “Great War” had continued on for more than three years; hundreds of thousands of young men had been killed or maimed and the demands to send more men to the trenches of Europe was incessant. Revolution in Russia was threatening to take the Russians out of the seemingly endless war against Germany. In light of this Canadians were no longer volunteering to fight in the numbers that they once did and the Union Government of Canada was moving closer to conscripting civilians to fill the depleted Canadian battalions at the Front. It is well known that conscription was not popular in Quebec and in April 1918 anti-conscription riots broke out in Quebec City.

In Autumn of 1918 fate had brought  disenchanted soldiers from Quebec and political activists from BC together in Victoria. The Borden government of Canada had promised the British government that it would send soldiers to Russia to fight Lenin’s Red Army. The route there was through Victoria. What happened next will be the subject of this presentation about this fascinating time in Canadian history.
