Writing short stories is no less of a challenge than any other form of literary expression, but authors such as Sarah Gilbert<\/strong> (she\/her) and Alexander MacLeod<\/strong> (he\/him) excel at conveying a complete, and at times complex, narrative in this concise format. Come gain insight on how an author can fit plot twists, clever dialogue, and much more in just a few pages, and learn about the wealth of meaning and topics that short stories can cover.<\/p>\n

Sarah Gilbert<\/strong> (she\/her) has been living in Mile End Montreal since 1990. Stories from her popular blog on changes in the neighbourhood were featured in the book Histoire du Mile End<\/em>\u00a0by Yves Desjardins and her fiction has appeared in a variety of literary journals. Gilbert has worked as a freelance writer and a radio producer and is a faculty member at Dawson College where she teaches literature. Our Lady of Mile End<\/em> is her first book.<\/p>\n

Alexander MacLeod<\/strong>\u2019s (he\/him) work has appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, The Guardian<\/em>, and The Globe and Mail<\/em>. His first collection of short stories, Light Lifting<\/em>, was named a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, The American Library Association\u2019s Carnegie Medal for Fiction, and the Commonwealth Book Prize. He is a past winner of the O Henry Prize and, in 2023, he was chosen to serve as the Frank O\u2019Connor International Fellow in Short Fiction in Cork City, Ireland. His most recent collection, Animal Person<\/em> (2022), was named a \u201cBook of the Year\u201d by The New Yorker, The Irish Times, The Globe and Mail<\/em> and CBC Books. Alexander lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and teaches at Saint Mary\u2019s University.<\/p>\n
